WRE works with local, state, and federal agencies to plan new projects and upgrade existing systems. Our engineers also help develop strategies and formulate policies for the management of water resources. Recent project experience includes:

• Evaluation of improvements to a regional water system, including covered reservoirs, submerged pump station, and hydropower potential at an existing dam outlet.
• Development of stormwater management performance measures to be applied to new and redevelopment projects in areas served by a combined sewer system.
• Operations and maintenance manuals
• Evaluation of proposed sewer system upgrades through hydraulic modeling.
• Assessment of mini- and micro-hydropower potential for a county water agency in California.

Our engineers apply their expertise and practical experience to breaking down complex problems into smaller parts to gain a thorough understanding of the issues involved and facilitate the design of specific project components. Recent project experience includes:

• Development and calibration of hydraulic model to evaluate possible improvements to a drinking water distribution system; project includes consideration of dual piping to use untreated water to supply fire hydrants.
• Field sampling and testing of creek water to establish a water quality baseline prior to construction of a dam.
• Analysis of sewer system operation through hydraulic modeling.
• Field and telephone surveys to establish acceptability of various water- conserving fixtures in a major metropolitan area.

WRE specializes in the design of water conveyance/storage/treatment systems and structures. Our experience includes design of dams, spillways, outlet structures; water supply intakes; canals and pipelines; pump stations and hydropower facilities; flow control facilities, including large valves and gates; storm drains, sewers, and appurtenant structures; potable water transmission and distribution systems; re-circulating cooling water systems for power plants; piers and port-related facilities; and water and wastewater treatment facilities. Recent project experience includes:

• Feasibility-level design of flow control gates of unprecedented dimensions for an American waterway. The gates will provide a salinity intrusion barrier intended to improve water quality and fish habitats.
• Preparation of plans and specifications for retrofit of stormwater pump stations.
• Hydraulic design of new stormwater and wastewater pump stations.
• Design of vegetated swale to provide street drainage in industrial area.
• Design of headrace, fish screens, and vertical shaft for low-head hydropower plant in Pacific Northwest.
• Design of solar-powered pump system, pump intake, piping, storage tanks, and groundwater well to supply water to cattle in remote area.

WRE assists clients in preparing operation plans for new facilities and resolving operational problems in existing systems. Our engineers are familiar with regulatory requirements and permitting issues.

Recent project experience includes:

• Upgrading of operations plan and procedures manual for the drinking water distribution system in a major city.
• Development of policies and procedures manual for the environmental services group of a large water utility.
• Preparation of right-of-way management plan for over 200 miles of water and power conveyance facilities.
• Assessment of water transport system readiness for catastrophic events, including total loss of power, system contamination, terrorist acts, and major earthquakes.

WRE assists clients in planning maintenance activities, prepararing Operation and Maintenance (O&M) plans, and evaluating current maintenance practices. Our engineers can assess the physical conditions of water facilities and recommend operation and maintenance improvements, with emphasis on sustainable, best management practices.

Recent project experience includes:

• Preparation of O&M Plan for major water transmission pipeline.
• Evaluation of pumping capacity and power consumption for raw water pipeline supplying four water treatment plants.
• Preparation of O&M plans for reservoir outlet structures and conduit connecting two reservoirs.
