Wet Weather Pump Station Design

Client: San Francisco Public Utilities Commission

Located near Fisherman's Wharf, the North Point Wet-Weather Facility (NPF) is one of San Francisco's oldest facilities and was the main treatment facility until 1983. As part of the Clean Water Act upgrades, the NPF converted to a wet- weather only facility that provides pretreatment and primary-level treatment with disinfection of wastewater collected in the north part of the City. Built in 1951, the NPF, North Shore Pump Station, and North Point Outfalls are in need of upgrades to improve the operational reliability of the City’s system.

WRE was part of a team retained by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to assist with the design of improvements to the North Shore Pump Station. WRE provided physical modeling services to complement computer modeling of pump station improvements. The scaled-down replica of the pump station was built at the North Point facilities and allowed City engineers and consultants to view proposed designs in action. The design of pump station improvements was refined through physical model tests to ensure their workability and efficiency.
