Wastewater Pump Station Reliability Improvements

The Westside Pump Station is a combined sewer pump station that receives dry and wet weather flows from the western side of San Francisco. The City’s Wastewater Enterprise evaluated several alternatives to increase the reliability of the station and address its operational needs.

Proposed improvements were initially evaluated using computational fluid dynamics modeling. Given the criticality of the improvements and the unusual configurations of channels and pump chambers, designers recommended that physical model studies be performed.

WRE conducted physical model studies to develop a hydraulically efficient and cost-effective design for pump station improvements. The physical model was built within the City’s Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant and was readily accessible to City engineers and design reviewers.
